ECOLE NORMALE

The Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris

114 bis, boulevard Malesherbes, 75017 Paris, France

Founded in 1919 by Alfred Cortot, the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris is a truly unique institution, a "gold home" according to Paul Valéry. The sumptuous décor and the august history and tradition of the school contribute to its distinct aura. Many great musicians have taught and studied there, including Dinu Lipatti, Igor Stravinsky, Olivier Messiaen, Pablo Casals, Henri Dutilleux, and Jerome Lowenthal, to name a few.

Located in the 17th arrondissement, a high-end residential and commercial district of Paris, the Ecole Normale de Musique is steps away from the lovely Parc Monceau, where students relax between classes. The neighboring architecture is predominantly Haussmannian, with traditional, elegant buildings and large boulevards.

Salle Cortot

All concerts of the Paris Piano Program take place in the Salle Cortot, an art-deco masterpiece and an acoustical gem. "It sounds like a Stradivarius," wrote Alfred Cortot. Designed by Auguste Perret, the architect of the Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Salle Cortot has beautiful paneling and a circular stage, on which countless renowned artists have played. It is one of the most appreciated music theaters in Paris.
